Buddhism is not only a form of religion but is also a form of spirituality. The beliefs of Buddhism revolve around beliefs and practices which are aimed at bringing you closer to the highest level in spiritual awareness and closer to Buddahood. With most of the followers coming from Asia, others coming from other regions of the world, the way Buddhism is practiced has been split into several different areas. Many of these beliefs are still similar with Buddha remaining as the sole teacher and truths still remaining as the 4 noble truths and the path of the Eightfold with the teachings. The belief that Buddahood is the highest level of spirituality still remains the same.

There are three main types of Buddhism or better known as the Northern Buddhism, Eastern Buddhism and Western Buddhism. Known as Theraveda Buddhism, the goal is to reach Nirvana and the only school still surviving from the early years of Buddhism. Mainly this form of the religion is found practiced in Sri Lanka and Laos as well as Cambodia.

The next type of Buddhism is known as Mahayana Buddhism and teaches that not only the Pali Canon form of Buddhism but also will add beliefs that make it possible to reach Nirvana. In order to practice this form of Buddhism, you must be willing to show complete compassion.

The third type of Buddhism is the Tibetan Buddhism. This uses both of the previous practices but also uses a number of tantras which is aimed at reaching buddahood in just one lifetime rather than a number of reincarnations. The same goal and belief comes from all the types of Buddhism but is obtained differently. You must know which one is which prior to the practice of Buddhism.

The primary language of Tibet is actual Tibetan, but since it is derived from the many dialects of Chinese, you are more likely to get by if you can understand some Mandarin. This will work for most everybody you meet except some of the nomadic tribes found in the Far East regions of the country. The language is somewhat related to Burmese and only distantly related to Chinese, but depending on the dialect spoken, it can take on either a tonal or non-tonal form, and you need to take that into consideration.

In the big cities most of the people are fluent in Chinese, and that should tell you a lot about the culture and the politics of the region. Most of the signs including the traffic signs, are bilingual – Chinese as well as Tibetan. Often there will be a third if a major local language is spoken there. Clearly, Chinese is the most useful language for travelers to Tibet, and that should be your main clue as to what you want to brush up in anticipation of your next trip to this mysterious and wonderful land.

Meditation provides an opportunity for the individual to distance himself or herself from the causes of stress that occurs in our everyday lives. Most people do not take the time out on a regular basis to sit in silence. When a few minutes are taken to remove the mind from the energy absorbing distractions that can start to make use feel overwhelmed one gradually acquires a better sense of well being. When one has a sense of controlling one’s own life rather than the world being at the controls there will be fewer anxiety attacks.

Far too many people are relying on medicating themselves in an attempt to control an overactive reaction to the ongoing fast paced stimulus around us. The high speed of living is not natural to the human organism anymore than any other animal life would find it relaxing. Nature all around us lives at a slower tempo and is in the perfect balance that it is meant to be in. Man needs to slow down and find peaceful meditation is helpful.

The term Buddha simply means “the awakened one”. Buddha lived and taught his ways during the 4-6th centuries, in India.

Today more than 900 million people are Buddhists. That is around 2% of the entire population. Unlike traditional religion, Buddhists do not accept a doctrine but rather a way of life. They focus on the aspects of Buddha’s teachings. Most that follow this doctrine today are “Chinese, Thai, Sri Lankan, Tibetan, Japanese, and Indian”. They have adapted a ‘Western Buddhism’ a more modern adaptation of the lifestyle and teachings.

While many people have different variations of how they practice Buddhism, the basic principals are the same. They use a great deal of devotion times, which includes meditation, chanting, prayers and bowing. Yoga is also a widely used Buddhist activity, which increases the bodies strength and the power of the mind and concentration. Prayer, like in any other religion, is still the most important aspect in a Buddhists life.

Tibet is located in central Asia north east of the Himalaya mountains. Tibet rests on a plateau that is elevated to heights making agriculture limited in scope. Most people in this region raise and live off of their livestock, with agriculture limited to a few vegetables and barley. The people live a subsistence lifestyle, with few of the modern conveniences found in the western world. Their religion is a form of Buddhism that is found only in Tibet and the surrounding area including parts of India and Mongolia. The leader of Tibetan Buddhism is the Dalai Lama.

Currently the country is considered to be a province, or more specifically an Autonomous Region, of the People’s Republic of China. However, this remains controversial. China gained control of Tibet in 1950, but ten years later, after a failed rebellion, a government in exile was set up. Today this opposition still exists and is headed by the Dalai Lama. China has opened up Tibet to tourism, and this is a rising aspect of the Tibetan economy. People are now visiting Tibet from China as well as from places around the world.

I have been practicing buddhism for many years. I became interested in it while I researched the subject in college. It is a religion that includes different customs, practices and beliefs based on what was taught by Siddharta Gautama. He was believed by many followers to be an enlightened one whose purpose was to free other people from the cycle of suffering and then becoming born again. This religion is taught throughout the world, although it remains especially popular in Asia.

As a Buddhist, I follow the teachings from the cardinal doctrine of dependent origin. The foundation of this religion is the Three Jewels which are known as the Buddha, the Dharma or teachings and the Shagha or community. As a follower I commit to these three important principals that make up the religion. This is what has made me a Buddhist compared to other individuals who are non-Buddhists and have not chosen to follow the path. One thing I have been learned was that if I do good things I will be kindly rewarded.

While many individuals are aware of such exotic countries as China and Japan many may not be aware of another still as wonderful and intriguing land. Tibet is located in Asia, northeast of the Himalaya Mountains. The land has served as the long standing traditional home of the Tibetan people. Just likes it’s surrounding neighbors Tibet has a long and interesting history. First unified in the seventh century Tibet soon fell into division. From then on the country has experienced times of peace and unity. The land has been ruled over by both the Mongols and various Chinese dynasties.

Tibet is well known for its beautiful artwork and also its deep and astounding religious practices. It is from this area that the Dali Lama originates from. Tibetan Buddhism is a major branch of Buddhist thought and practice. Visitors to Tibet are sure to find many things to delight them and challenge them.

While this may seem to be some new age, strange thing that you simply don’t have time for, consider the benefits. Even medical doctors agree that meditation is beneficial to your physical wellness. Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and other mental health professionals alike will all tell you that your mind can think more clearly and will suffer from less overwhelming stressful feelings if you take just a few minutes every day to meditate. If you aren’t sure how to begin or what to do; relax. Literally, the first thing you should do is relax. Meditation is not necessarily sitting indian style and making humming noises. It is much more.
